SUMTER PLAYERS, INC.
 

Founded in 1965, Sumter Players, Inc. is kicking off our 62nd season of being Americus' Community Theatre. We are a Georgia Non-Profit Corporation, tax exempt as a public charity under Sec. 501c(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. We are an all-volunteer membership organization that is open to everyone without regard to age, gender, color, national origin, race, disability, or any other defining characteristic. While our immediate service area is Sumter County, Georgia, we also draw volunteers, talent and audiences from surrounding counties in Southwest Georgia.

 

We produce four mainstage performances a year as well as host a summer theatre camp series (Kids Week/Teen Week/Tech Week/Theatre Sewing Camp) and teen theatre group (The Jesters). Sumter Players, Inc. is governed by a Board of Directors of between eleven and eighteen persons elected by the board to serve staggered terms of three years each. The membership of Sumter Players consists of all those who purchase a season ticket at any price level. Members are invited to attend our annual membership meeting and awards banquet, where they can vote for each of the award categories stemming from the completed season of productions. Corporation Officers are elected annually by the Board of Directors at the first Board meeting after the annual membership meeting.

 

Sumter Players provides opportunities not only for performers and backstage talent, but for almost any skill – carpentry, journalism, photography, painting, costuming, etc. In 2023, we completed a year of strategic planning with the Leadership Institute at Columbus State University, resulting in a 5-year plan that our Board of Directors adopted unanimously. We have currently completed 2/3 of the goals that we set for our organization. We are passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of community members and are committed to self-development as an organization to ensure that we meet our goals.

 

The mission of Sumter Players is to awaken and encourage creativity and self-expression by providing opportunities for engagement in community theatre. Our vision is to build community through theatre, and our overarching goal is to enrich the quality of life for our community. We strive to create meaningful opportunities for children, teens, adults and senior citizens to be involved in community theatre regardless of financial means.
